Mumbai Indians Squad | The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), also known as IPL 17 and sponsored by Tata in 2024, is set to unfold as the premier T20 cricket competition in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The Chennai Super Kings are the reigning champions, having secured their fifth championship in the previous season by defeating the Gujarat Titans, thereby matching the Mumbai Indians as the most successful franchise in the tournament’s history.
IPL 2024 Overview
The tournament will be held in India, as confirmed by IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal on February 14, 2024. The BCCI plans to coordinate with the Government of India and other entities to finalize the schedule, ensuring that match allocations are synchronized with the 2024 Lok Sabha Election timetable set by the Election Commission of India. Dhumal hinted at a likely start towards the end of March, taking into account that the general elections are scheduled for April.
The format for the IPL involves dividing the teams into two groups, A and B, each containing five teams. Teams will face each team from the opposite group twice (once at home and once away) and will play against each team within their own group once. This results in each team playing fourteen matches, split evenly between home and away. Following the group stages, the top four teams advance to the playoffs. The playoffs comprise “Qualifier 1” between the top two teams, and the “Eliminator” involving the third and fourth-placed teams. The loser of Qualifier 1 gets another chance to reach the final by facing the winner of the Eliminator in “Qualifier 2”. The final pits the winner of Qualifier 1 against the winner of Qualifier 2 to determine the champion.
A significant rule change introduced for this season allows bowlers to deliver up to two bouncers per over, a modification tested during the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 competition.
