ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024: Format, Teams & Venues
The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup marks the tournament’s ninth edition, featuring biennial Twenty20 International (T20I) matches among men’s national teams under the organization of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The West Indies and the United States co-host it from June 1 to June 29, 2024, marking the inaugural matches in the United States for an ICC World Cup event. England, the reigning champions, clinched victory against Pakistan in the previous edition’s final.
The tournament now has 20 teams, up from 16. Hosts and top eight teams qualify automatically. Two from rankings join. Eight teams qualified regionally, with Canada, Uganda, and the United States making their T20 World Cup debuts.
Format
Twenty teams split into four groups of five. Top two teams from each group advance to Super 8 round. Qualifying teams then form two groups of four. Top two from each group advance to knockout stage. This stage will comprise two semi-finals and a final match to determine the ultimate champion.
Teams and qualification
The 2022 tournament’s top eight teams and the two host nations secured automatic qualification for the upcoming event. Two slots given to top-ranked teams in T20I rankings as of November 14, 2022, not already in finals.
The remaining eight spots were determined through regional qualifiers organized by the ICC. Qualifiers had two teams from Africa, Asia, and Europe, plus one each from the Americas and East Asia-Pacific. In May 2022, the ICC confirmed the sub-regional pathways for Europe, East Asia-Pacific, and Africa.
By July 2023, Ireland and Scotland emerged as the first two qualifiers from the Europe Qualifier, followed by Papua New Guinea from the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier. Canada secured their berth in October 2023 by defeating Bermuda in the Americas Qualifier final. Nepal and Oman qualified after Asia Qualifier final. Namibia and Uganda secured spots from Africa Qualifier. Notably, Zimbabwe, a Test-playing nation, failed to qualify for the tournament.

Venues
In May 2023, CWI began bidding among Caribbean countries and US parties to host World Cup matches.
By July 2023, ICC had shortlisted four potential venues in the United States: Fort Lauderdale (Central Broward Park), Morrisville (Church Street Park), Dallas (Grand Prairie Stadium), and New York (Van Cortlandt Park). Protests in the Bronx against Van Cortlandt Park’s stadium led ICC to choose Eisenhower Park instead.
By September 20, 2023, the ICC finalized three venues in the United States: Lauderhill (Central Broward Park), Dallas (Grand Prairie Stadium), and New York (Nassau County Stadium). Additionally, they decided to construct a temporary modular stadium at Eisenhower Park with a capacity of 34,000, while also doubling the capacities of existing stadiums in Fort Lauderdale and Dallas through modular solutions to accommodate more seating, media facilities, and premium hospitality areas.
On September 22, 2023, the ICC confirmed seven venues in the Caribbean Islands: Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, St Lucia, St Vincent & The Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago, which would host matches. Jamaica, St Kitts & Nevis, and Grenada didn’t bid due to cost concerns, per Jamaican sports minister Olivia Grange.
In November 2023, it was revealed that Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval would not host any World Cup matches; instead, fixtures would be relocated to the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in San Fernando. Similarly, Dominica’s Windsor Park was withdrawn as a venue due to infrastructural development issues.
On January 17, 2024, the ICC revealed the proposed design for the modular stadium in New York City, naming it Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. They anticipate completing it by the end of May 2024.
